Why Choose a Sustainable and Ethically Made Baby Crib?

Choosing a crib goes beyond just picking a sleeping place for your baby; it’s about making a conscious choice that aligns with broader values of sustainability and ethics. Sustainable cribs, like those from Nestig, use responsibly sourced wood and employ safety-tested manufacturing processes. This not only reduces deforestation but also minimizes environmental harm, creating a safer, healthier interior atmosphere for children.

Not to mention, ethically made cribs are typically produced under fair labor conditions, ensuring that workers involved in the manufacturing process are treated fairly and paid a living wage. This “buy once, use forever” philosophy means these cribs are designed to last, potentially being passed down through generations, which speaks volumes about their durability and longevity.

Nestig Crib: The Full Review

We tested the crib on five parameters: Sourcing, Materials, Manufacturing, Functionality, and Durability. Let’s walk through each of them.

Sourcing

Nestig cribs are made in a family-run factory in Brazil. Each crib is hand-designed with intention, keeping sustainability and ethical labor practices at the forefront of its operations. All of Nestig’s furniture, including the Wave Crib, are built with wood that’s sourced from reforested lands of Brazil.

Materials

The structure of the Wave crib is from Brazilian pine wood. Each log is sourced from reforested lands across Brazil. Nestig works with local inter-state Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood suppliers to source raw materials. This ensures an added layer of assurance to the ethical sourcing of wood.

The mattress support is made of sustainably sourced and TSCA Title VI compliant eco-engineered wood. Why does it matter? The TSCA compliant raw materials pass the strictest formaldehyde standards. Apart from the frame, the glue and other materials also have TSCA compliance.

The Wave Crib comes with a hypoallergenic mini mattress. The mattresses are made from 100% polyurethane foam and a 100% polyester cover. Designed with infant health in mind, the mattresses have no toxic chemicals, phthalates, or lead. Before shipping worldwide, each mattress passes the U.S. toxicity standards.

Manufacturing

Nestig’s cribs are partially hand-made by local artisans in a family-owned Brazilian factory. Most artisans and workers employed boast an average experience of over forty years working in the furniture making industry.

The factory uses a mix of machinery, technology and hand-detailing to create cribs that are durable, functional, and beautiful.

Highlight: The “Just Enough Model”

We also appreciate the factory’s commitment to having a no-inventory model that creates inventory on demand, instead of producing bulk quantities like their non-sustainable competitors. The factory works with heritage manufacturers to gauge the demand and supply of each product, and produce in small batches around the year.

Functionality

What truly sets the Wave Crib apart is its versatility and thoughtfulness in design. Starting as a compact mini crib with a custom-sized mattress, it perfectly replaces the need for a separate bassinet. Its mobility, courtesy of the removable wheels, allows easy movement of the crib across your home. The ease of mobility and adjustment to three mattress heights underscored the practicality and foresight in Nestig’s design.

Highlight: Adjustable Heights

Nestig’s promise of lasting a lifetime is well-represented in its functional design. Each crib comes with the adjustable heights options, which are:
